Atlanta United 2 drew The Miami FC 2-2 at FIU Stadium on Saturday. Darwin Matheus scored his third goal of the season in the second half before an own goal from Miami’s Joshua Perez late in the game sealed the draw for ATL UTD 2.
Miami opened the scoring just before the halftime break. After a freekick was taken quickly, Christian Sorto lobbed the ball into the area from the right flank and found the head of an unmarked Callum Chapman-Page for the first goal of the night.
ATL UTD 2 equalized off a moment of brilliance from Matheus. Raimar cut inside from the left and played a through ball to the Venezuelan, whose first touch opened up the Miami defense and Matheus was able to slot the ball past Jake McGuire.
Miami went ahead again in the 70th minute as captain Paco Craig darted through the midfield before playing a through ball to Kyle Murphy in between two Atlanta defenders. Murphy, Miami’s leading goalscorer this season, finessed a strike into the bottom left corner of Vicente Reyes’ goal to regain the lead for the hosts.
In the 81st minute, Atlanta found the equalizer once again with some help from the Miami defense. Midfielder Joshua Perez, in an attempt to make a headed clearance from a corner kick, headed the ball into his own net ensuring the point for ATL UTD 2.
ATL UTD 2 (5-5-21, 20 points) returns to Fifth Third Bank Stadium for the final time in 2022 to play against Indy Eleven on Wednesday, September 28 (7:30 p.m., ESPN+).
