Atlanta United wrapped up its three-match road trip on Sunday night, falling 6-2 to New York Red Bulls II. Forward Karim Tmimi scored his third goal in three matches to claim his sixth goal of the 2024 campaign while Dominik Chong Qui bagged his first professional goal.
New York struck first, when in the 14th minute Malick Zanke Dembele slipped a pass beyond Atlanta's backline and into the box on a counterattack which met the feet of Tanner Rosborough to slot away a shot to the bottom left corner.
In the 25th minute, Matรญas Gallardo slid a pass to Tmimi who was holding up his defender just in front of goal. Tmimi was able to turn and get a shot off towards the back post, but his attempt was knocked away for a corner.
Tmimi broke the seal for ATL UTD 2 in the 27th minute following brilliant buildup play from Atlanta. The visitors strung together 15 consecutive passes between 10 players, which ended with Jacob Williams centering a cross to the six-yard box from the left flank for Tmimi who outstretched his right leg to poke a shot home to level the match at 1-1.
The home side finished out the half with three unanswered goals. In the 43rd, Rafael Antonio Mosquera sent a cross into the box from the left side which was met by Williams, but his clearance attempt was mishit and sent into the net. In the 45th minute, Julian Hall won a tackle in the midfield and carried the ball towards the box before he launched a right-footed shot into the left side of goal from 20 yards out. Five minutes into stoppage time, Juan Gutierrez Ruiz connected for a header on a corner to make it 4-1 heading into the break.
New York's Mosquera claimed a goal of his own in the 88th minute after he found himself on the other end of a pass sent into the middle of the box, striking the ball to the top right corner of the goal.
Atlanta's final chance of the match came five minutes into second half stoppage time. Midfielder Javier Armas floated in a corner kick, which was flicked towards the back post by Noble Okello before Chong Qui wound up for a right-footed volley that found its way to the bottom left corner.
New York looked to get one back immediately, as one minute after Chong Qui's goal Juan Jose Mina flicked a cross to Hall in the box who stabbed in a right-footed shot to end the match at 6-2.
