Atlanta United announced today that Atlanta United 2 forward Jonantan Villal has been called up to the Mexico Under-18 Men's Youth National Team for its training camp in Mexico City from August 6 – 11.
Villal, 17, has logged 540 minutes for Atlanta United 2 this season and has logged two assists under head coach Jack Collison. Receiving his first-ever national team callup, the Atlanta, Georgia native becomes the fourth Atlanta United 2 player to receive a national team callup this year.
The forward represented the Atlanta United U-17 squad in the Generation adidas Cup in April, helping the team progress out of the group stage.
Villal was a member of the Academy’s inaugural U-12 roster in 2016 and has been with Atlanta United since he was 11 years old. He currently stands as the youngest USL Championship player to record an assist this season.
ATL UTD 2 (4-17-4, 16 points) travels to MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, New Jersey to take on New York Red Bulls II on Tuesday, August 9 (7:00 p.m., ESPN+).
