Atlanta United 2 defender Raimar was named the USL Championship Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday. The Brazilian defender recorded his first professional brace and helped ATL UTD 2 keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory against Loudoun United on Saturday night. Making his debut for ATL UTD 2 last month, this marks Raimar’s first accolade from the USL and the sixth time an ATL UTD 2 player has been named USL Championship Player of the Week.
Raimar opened the scoring against Loudoun through a penalty in the 32nd minute. The full back touched an over-the-top ball from Efraín Morales down for Andy Sullins, who spun into the penalty area before being brought down by a Loudoun defender. The referee pointed to the spot and Raimar utilized a stutter-step approach to score his second penalty goal of the year.
The 20-year-old doubled his tally in stoppage time, dispossessing the opposition in midfield and making a run toward goal. David Mejía picked up the loose ball and sent Raimar on a breakaway. The newly crowned USL Championship Player of the Week ran with the ball from the halfway line into the Loudoun penalty area before unleashing a shot with his left foot for his first goal this season from open play.
Raimar earned 47 percent of the vote from the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.
Raimar and ATL UTD 2 (3-10-1, 10 points) ends its two-match homestand at Fifth Third Bank Stadium this Saturday, June 18 against Hartford Athletic (7:30 p.m., ESPN+).
