Atlanta United has been going full steam toward the postseason, but don’t forget that the future of the club is still hard at work fighting for their future. Here’s what you may have missed from the Atlanta United Academy last month:
England Preseason Tour
The Atlanta United Academy is committed to providing world-class experience to its athletes, and they got another chance to shine at the top level last month. The U-17 squad traveled to England for an unforgettable tour hosted by Vertex Soccer facing some of the country’s biggest clubs. They went unbeaten on the tour, beating Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City and drawing against West Brom and Burnley FC. They also got to see some of England’s most historic grounds up close and learn from some of the best on how to prepare themselves for their future in the beautiful game.
Coach invited to elite training program
Atlanta United’s Academy players were already getting world-class coaching, but that is only getting better. U14s coach Steven Covino has been invited to participate in the French Football federation’s Elite Formation Coaching License course, a year-long youth development course for the best youth coaches in the world. Covino is the third coach to undergo the program, following the footsteps of Academy Director Tony Annan and Matt Lawrey
George Campbell U-20 Call-up
It’s been quite a summer for Atlanta United Academy graduate George Campbell. After shining with ATL UTD 2 this season, he earned a Homegrown contract as his first professional contract. He also scored his first professional goal with a header against USL powerhouse Indy Eleven. And that’s now translating to the international scene as he earned his first call-up to the U.S. U20 team.
USL 20 under 20
The recognition didn’t stop there for George Campbell, nor his teammate and fellow Academy graduate Andrew Carleton, who were both named in the USL 20 under 20 list for this season. Carleton came in at #12, while Campbell was named #14 among all of USL’s young talent.
DA Cup Results
Last but certainly not least, the Academy season is in full swing with several age groups competing in the DA Cup. First up was the Houston Dynamo Academy, where the U19s, U17s and U15s all came out winners in a nine-point day for the Atlanta United Academy. Then it was Orlando City, and two more wins, a 6-2 result for the U15s and a 2-0 win for the U17s. This is just the start of the season, so stay tuned throughout the year as they continue in hopes of getting back on top and repeating that 2017 USSDA National Championship.
Goal of the Month
A clever flick from the U17’s Tyler Wolff against Inter Miami takes the cake as the best goal of the month.
