Atlanta United 2 picked up a 1-1 draw against Saint Louis FC on Saturday night at West Community Stadium. Amir Bashti secured the road point with a spectacular goal as Atlanta extended its unbeaten run to five matches, which is a new team record.
Atlanta opened the match brightly with an early chance in the second minute. Mikey Ambrose sent a corner in from the left side, where it was flicked on at the near post by Laurence Wyke. At the far post, Patrick Okonkwo came flying in and his diving header went just wide of the goal.
After Saint Louis had a couple of opportunities off set pieces, ATL UTD 2 ended the half with another good chance. Luiz Fernando collected a long clearance on the left side and dribbled into the box. After a couple of stepovers, Fernando unleashed a left-footed blast that was parried over the bar by Tomas Gomez. The two sides went into the break scoreless.
Saint Louis scored the opening goal in the 67th minute. Bradley Kamden Fewo sent a cross from the left side to the far post, where Tyler Blackwood got between two defenders and connected on a volley to give the home side the lead.
The lead only lasted five minutes as one of ATL UTD 2’s substitutes made a big impact. Mo Adams dribbled at the top of the box and slipped a pass through to Bashti. After a slight deflection, Bashti turned and fired a right-footed shot into the top left corner leaving Gomez absolutely no chance. It was Bashti’s first professional goal. Both teams had a couple of opportunities for a winner late, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.
ATL UTD 2 (8-16-7, 31 points) returns to action Saturday, Oct. 5 against Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 7:00 p.m. EST at Highmark Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
