ATLANTA — Atlanta United today announced it has acquired forward Miguel Berry from D.C. United in exchange for $150,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM). Atlanta could also send D.C. United an additional $100,000 in 2024 GAM if certain performance-based incentives are met. D.C. United also retain a percentage of any future sell-on amount for Berry.

“We’re pleased to add Miguel to the team and look forward to welcoming him to Atlanta,” Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “Miguel is an athletic forward with experience scoring goals in this league. He’ll add competition to our group and be able to join the team immediately to be available for selection this weekend.”

Berry, 25, is a three-year veteran in MLS after being selected No. 7 overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by Columbus Crew. During the 2021 season, Berry earned his first opportunity at extended playing time with Columbus, scoring eight goals with two assists in 18 games played (nine starts). All eight goals came in the second half of the season, highlighted by a second-half brace that Berry picked up against archrival FC Cincinnati, bringing the Crew back from a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 on Aug. 27. Last year, Berry appeared in 16 games with 13 starts with Columbus before he was traded mid-season to D.C. United on July 18. Between the two clubs, he combined to make 30 appearances with 21 starts. He scored two goals, including the Crew’s first goal of the season in a 4-0 win against Vancouver.

Collegiately, Berry made 72 appearances (69 starts) for the University of San Diego while registering 38 goals and 16 assists from 2016-2019. In his senior year, 2019, the forward made 18 appearances (all starts) while netting 17 goals – tied for second-most goals in a single-season for the University of San Diego – and providing eight assists. For his performance in the 2019 season, Berry was named the WCC Co-Player of the Year, and he was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann National Player of the Year award. Additionally, the forward also earned a spot in the following teams: the USC All-America Second Team, the All-WCC First Team, the USC Scholar All-American First Team, the USC All-West Region First Team, and the College Sports Information Directors of America All-American Third Team.

Berry is fluent in English, Spanish and German, and speaks some Catalan.
