U.S. international goalkeeper Brad Guzan is officially available to play for Atlanta United.
After captaining the U.S. Men’s National Team to two victories in their opening two matches in the Gold Cup, Guzan was cleared this weekend to return to Atlanta to rejoin the squad. He is now available to Head Coach Tata Martino for selection as early as the upcoming match against Orlando City later this week.
Guzan signed for Atlanta United on a multi-year contract earlier this year, but had to wait until the league transfer window to open earlier this month to officially join up with the team. It’s a return to MLS for Guzan, who was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft and was named to the 2007 MLS Best XI before spending nearly a decade in the English Premier League. He made nearly 170 appearances in England’s top flight between stints at Aston Villa, Hull City and Middlesbrough, and was named Aston Villa’s player of the season in 2013.
Guzan has more than 50 caps for the U.S. Men’s National team, earning a Golden Glove Award as the best goalkeeper in the tournament at the 2015 Gold Cup. He was also part of the USMNT squad for each of the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, the 2007 Gold Cup and earned the starting role for the 2016 Copa America Centenario.
Guzan will re-join the team at their training session on Monday. He will be officially unveiled to the public on Tuesday afternoon at a press conference at 1 p.m. EST, which will be streamed live in its entirety at atlud.com/live.
