In just their third year of existence, Atlanta United will represent Major League Soccer as the reigning champion in this year’s Campeones Cup. After facing Mexican competition in Concacaf Champions’ League earlier this year, it will be another contest against a Liga MX side in Mexican giants Club America for Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium this year.
Here’s how it works: As the reigning champions, Atlanta United punched their ticket by winning last year’s MLS Cup over the Portland Timbers. The Liga MX representative was determined by the winners of their two domestic seasons facing off in the Campeón de Campeones, with Club America beating out Tigres back on July 14th.
This competition started just last year, with Tigres coming out 3-1 winners over Toronto FC in the inaugural season. It’s a celebration of the two premier soccer leagues in North America, and a chance to bridge the gap between Mexican and American soccer fans. And just as important is to have a positive impact in the community hosting Campeones Cup. This year Atlanta United FC, MLS and LIGA MX will partner with the Latin American Association (LAA) in Atlanta to improve the workspace of its youth mentoring program. This program empowers the Latino community to adapt, integrate and thrive –– with more details about the partnership still to come.
So make sure you’re there for a chance to witness yet another historic night for Atlanta United as they represent Major League Soccer for the first time in the Campeones Cup. With Liga MX taking home the first title, the club is hoping the rowdy 17s at Mercedes-Benz Stadium can push them over the line against a strong Club America side to even up the series.
