Atlanta United’s radio play-by-play team got some special recognition Saturday at the Georgia Association of Broadcasters’ annual Gabby Awards, taking home the Class A award for Best Sports Play by Play for their broadcast of the 2018 MLS Cup.
Play-by-play announcer Mike Conti, color commentator Jason Longshore and production director James Fairey were individually named as well as the entire Sports Radio 92-9 The Game broadcast team. The specific call that was honored was the iconic final moments of the MLS Cup match that saw Atlanta United bring home the city’s first major championship in decades.
“We’ve said from the beginning that we wanted Atlanta United to be top class in every aspect,” said Atlanta United President Darren Eales. “Our radio team has performed at that level since our first match, and this award cements their place in the industry. We couldn’t be happier to have Mike, Jason and the whole 92-9 team as our radio partner.”
It’s just the exclamation point on what’s been an incredible partnership between Atlanta United and 92-9. Mike Conti and Jason Longshore are one of just a few radio teams in MLS that not only broadcasts every home match but also travels to every road match to broadcast live on location.
“We knew early on that Jason Longshore and Mike Conti were the best possible people to tell the Atlanta United story, and I’m happy to see them get this well-deserved recognition,” said Atlanta United Director of Digital and Broadcast Media Matt Moore. “The night of MLS Cup is a night we’ll never forget, and Jason and Mike’s call of the match stands out as an iconic memory from that moment. Our sincerest congratulations go out to them and the whole 92-9 team on an incredible accomplishment.”
Conti and Longshore will be back on the airwaves this weekend as Atlanta United take on the New England Revolution for the last match of the MLS regular season. Tune in Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ET on Fox Sports Southeast, or Star 94.1 FM.
