It's another BOOM GIAKOUMAKIS! for the history books. ⚡
Giorgos Giakoumakis found the back of the net Sunday, his fifth goal of the 2024 season, and with that the Greek striker became the second player in club history to score five goals in the first five matches of the regular season.
The goal arrived in the 45th minute when teammate Saba Lobjanidze placed the ball perfectly for Giakoumakis to put away from close range.
It was just the fourth of Atlanta United's five matches this season Giakoumakis played in. He was unavailable last weekend for Atlanta's match against Toronto FC while on international duty with his home country of Greece.
His fifth goal of the season also moved Giakoumakis to no. 2 on the club's all-time scoring list in the regular season. Previously tied with Tito Villalba and Miguel Almiron, Giakoumakis has now scored 22 goals in the MLS regular season.
The club's all-time leading scorer Josef Martínez was the last player to score five goals in the first five matches of an Atlanta United season. The Venezuelan striker did it twice in 2017 and 2018.
Giakoumakis's fourth goal of the season, the team's second goal of the match in the 2-0 shutout over Orlando City SC on March 17, also made club history. That finish, an incredible volley, moved Giakoumakis up to no. 2 all-time for Atlanta United in goals scored in all competitions.
The goal scored Sunday against Chicago Fire also keeps Atlanta United's striker toward the top of this year's Golden Boot race, which is presented to the MLS scoring leader. Giakoumakis now is tied for second behind only Lewis Morgan (6) of New York Red Bulls.
