Quentin Westberg retires from professional soccer

Quentin-Westberg-Retirement

Atlanta United backup goalkeeper Quentin Westberg announced his retirement from professional soccer following Atlanta United's season-ending loss in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs on November 24.

Westberg closes the chapter on a professional career that began in 2006 at ES Troyes AC, a French club in Ligue 1. The goalkeeper played in France and Norway before making the jump to Major League Soccer.

He became the first string goalkeeper for Toronto FC in 2019 and spent four seasons at the Eastern Conference club. Westberg played in 68 matches and recorded 10 clean sheets for Toronto. His save percentage was 60.7 percent or higher in each of those four seasons.

Westberg joined Atlanta United in December 2022 on a one-year contract. He made six MLS starts in 2023 and collected one clean sheet. He later would re-sign with Atlanta on a one-year contract through the 2024 season.

While Westberg didn't record as many minutes during his time in Atlanta, the 38-year-old provided experience and leadership to accompany captain and starter Brad Guzan at the goalkeeping position. Off the pitch, the two pitted their families against each other in a friendly competition of "Family Feud" produced by the club's video team and published on the Atlanta United YouTube channel.

A native of France, Westberg also spoke fluent French and helped translate for teammates. After Jamal Thiaré's impressive two-goal performance in the Game 3 upset over Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Playoffs, Westberg translated for Thiaré, who is from Senegal, in the post-match press conference.

Westberg is the second player from Atlanta United to announce his retirement from professional soccer in 2024. Dax McCarty, 19-year MLS veteran, has also called it a career.
