Atlanta United secured a place in the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 win over FC Cincinnati on Decision Day on Sunday.
It’s the fourth time Atlanta United has made the postseason since its inaugural season in 2017. The club previously qualified in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
The 5-Stripes entered Sunday’s match in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. They could’ve qualified with a win, draw or loss of fewer than eight goals.
However, Atlanta United controlled its own destiny, earning three points outright.
“We need to try to push forward for that playoff match at home, and that’s the mentality of the team and that’s what they have in their minds,” head coach Gonzalo Pineda said ahead of Sunday’s match.
A win made it possible for Atlanta to move into the conference’s top four and host in round one. However, New York City FC played Philadelphia to a 1-1 draw to hold onto the no. 4 spot. Atlanta United completes the season in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 51 points.
