The 2022 MLS SuperDraft presented by Adidas will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Atlanta United has four picks in this year’s SuperDraft, one in each of the first three rounds and a compensatory pick in the final round. The overall picks for Atlanta are nos. 19, 47, 75 and 88.
Expansion club Charlotte FC will have the overall No. 1 pick, followed by clubs that didn’t qualify for the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs. The fewest regular-season points among teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs determines the remaining order.
Atlanta is just one of four teams to have a fourth selection. The club received a compensatory pick in 2022 when Will Vint, a Homegrown midfielder, was acquired by the Colorado Rapids in 2020 in a trade.
Players eligible for selection in the 2022 SuperDraft include talent from college soccer. Click here to view the eligible players list. On the list is defender Charlie Asensio (Clemson) from Roswell, Ga. who was a product of the Atlanta United youth academy.
Academy systems are helping clubs develop talent in-house. However, the SuperDraft has produced gems. In the 2017 SuperDraft, Atlanta United selected defender Miles Robinson (Syracuse) with the second overall pick. Robinson has gone on to have a career year in 2021, making the MLS All-Star game, scoring his first career MLS goal and being named to the MLS Best XI.
In 2021, Atlanta United selected defender Josh Bauer (University of New Hampshire) and defender/midfielder Aiden McFadden (Notre Dame). This past season, both players logged significant minutes with Atlanta United 2 and McFadden led the 2’s in scoring with eight goals.
