Atlanta United's Open Cup run up to this point
To reach the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Atlanta United has earned two wins in the tournament. The first was in the Round of 32 against Charlotte Independence back in May at the site of Tuesday's match, Fifth Third Stadium. Atlanta United handled the USL League One side with a 3-0 clean sheet in goalkeeper Josh Cohen's club debut.
Cohen came up big in the team's next match in the Round of 16 against Charleston Battery of the USL Championship. After going scoreless in regulation and extra time, the match on May 21 was decided on penalty kicks. After both teams made four of their first five kicks, center back Stian Gregersen made the sixth for Atlanta, and Cohen stopped Charleston's sixth attempt to secure the first penalty shootout win in club history.
About Indy Eleven
Indy Eleven is a club created in 2013 and based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The team plays in the USL Championship and is led by head coach Sean McAuley. After playing at Lucas Oil Stadium for a few seasons, home of the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL, the club moved back to its original home of Carroll Stadium for the 2021 USL Championship season. Next year, the club will move to its new home Eleven Park, a development project that includes a 20,000-seat, soccer-specific stadium.
Indy Eleven enters Tuesday's matchup third place in their conference, one spot below Atlanta's previous Open Cup opponent Charleston Battery. Tuesday marks Atlanta United's first-ever meeting with the club.
What is the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup?
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination competition that includes various teams from American soccer leagues. It is the longest running national soccer competition in the U.S. Atlanta United won the competition in 2019. After two years of the competition not being held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlanta United entered the 2022 tournament as defending champions. They played MLS club Nashville SC in the Round of 32 but were eliminated.
