What is the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup?
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination competition that includes various teams from American soccer leagues. It is the longest running national soccer competition in the U.S. Atlanta United won the competition in 2019. After two years of the competition not being held due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlanta United entered the 2022 tournament as defending champions. They played MLS club Nashville SC in the Round of 32 but were eliminated.

About Charlotte Independence
Charlotte plays in the USL League One and joined the league in 2014. They are currently 2-1-1 in the USL League One. Their last match was on Friday where they walked away with a 3-1 win against Fuego FC. The Jacks were able to reach the Round of 32 after defeating Rhode Island FC in a dramatic penalty shootout. Reaching this point is the furthest the Jacks have advanced in the U.S. Cup since 2015. This will be the third time they have faced a team on the MLS side for the Open Cup; the other two times came in 2015 against New England Revolution (Round of 32) and Chicago Fire FC (Round of 16).
