Atlanta United announced today that Josef Martinez has been called-up by the Venezuelan National Team for the upcoming FIFA window (Oct. 8-16). Martinez is the fourth player called up for Atlanta United during this window and he will return to Atlanta following Venezuela’s match on Friday.
Martinez, 25, has broken multiple MLS records this season, including the league’s single-season record for goals that he broke against Orlando City SC on Aug. 24. Overall in 2018, he’s scored 30 goals in 32 games and leads the league’s Golden Boot race by nine with just two games to go. With the Venezuelan National Team, Martinez has 43 career appearances and has scored nine goals. Venezuela plays Basque Country on Friday, Oct. 12 and United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, Oct. 16. However, Martinez will return to Atlanta following the match against Basque Country.
Atlanta United (20-6-6, 66 points) returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 when it hosts Chicago Fire (3:00 p.m., FOX Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game).
