Josef-Martinez-Goal-of-the-Year-2022

Josef Martínez's ninth goal of the season was a stunner -- and now, it's officially the best of the year. The incredible bicycle kick won 2022 MLS AT&T Goal of the Year, the league announced Thursday.

The strike beats out 15 other nominees around the league for the yearly award. Fans determined Martínez the winner through a vote on MLSSoccer.com.

The announcement marks the third time in the club's six-year history that Atlanta United has won the award. Martínez previously won AT&T Goal of the Year in 2019. It was the second time in three years an Atlanta player earned the honor, joining Héctor Villalba in 2017.

This year's goal arrived on October 1 during Atlanta United's match at New England Revolution. On the play, midfielder Marcelino Moreno sent the ball wide to Brooks Lennon, who had some space on the right edge of New England's penalty area. Lennon crossed an impeccably placed ball to Martínez, and the Venezuelan put it past Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic on a bicycle kick. Both Moreno and Lennon were credited with assists on the play.
