Atlanta United 2 will face Memphis 901 FC Wednesday night at AutoZone Park in the first ever matchup between the two teams. As ESPN’s Game of the Week, the match is scheduled to kick-off at 8:00 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on ESPNews.
In its first match of a three-game stretch in seven days, ATL UTD 2 lost 2-0 against Saint Louis FC last Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. A pair of first half goals in the opening 20 minutes from Saint Louis put the game out of reach. Atlanta, however, dominated possession, controlling more than 70 percent in the second half, and out-shot Saint Louis 21-10 on the night with Homegrown Andrew Carleton tying the ATL UTD 2 single-match record with eight shots.
Memphis tied North Carolina FC 1-1 on Saturday, April 6. Marc Burch scored a penalty after Austin da Luz brought down Ewan Grandison inside the 18-yard box and received a red card. Down to 10 men, NCFC’s Marios Lomis tied the match in the 78th minute from a direct free kick. Adam Najem nearly scored the game-winner from a free kick in the 86th minute, but Alex Tambakis made a low diving save en route to being named to USL’s Team of the Week.
Wednesday’s match marks the first meeting between ATL UTD 2 and Memphis 901 FC. Both teams sit just below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference with Memphis in 11th with five points and Atlanta in 12th with four points.
