Recent Form
Atlanta United is coming off a bye last weekend, using the extra time to get healthy and prepare for the club's home opener. The 5-Stripes kicked off the season in Columbus against the defending MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew. The visitors played a tight contest, and had a strong second half, but fell 1-0. The Revs are also winless in MLS play, losing to both D.C. United and Toronto FC. New England is coming off a midweek match in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The Revs earned an impressive clean sheet, winning 4-0 over L.D. Alajuelense of Costa Rica.
Series History and Last Meeting
In MLS play, the series is even across the board with Atlanta United holding a 4-4-4 record against New England. The two Eastern Conference sides met twice in 2023. The first meeting occurred in May at Mercedes-Benz Stadium when Atlanta United scored three second-half goals to secure a point at home. Despite a goal from Machop Chol, the Revs got the better end of the second matchup on the road at Gillette Stadium and defeated Atlanta United 2-1 in July.
Players to Watch
Stian Gregersen (Atlanta United) - It might be odd to call out a defender for attack-minded Atlanta United's home opener, but Stian Gregersen is worth a look. The 6-foot-4 defender is a new anchor to Atlanta United's backline and is someone fullback Brooks Lennon described Thursday as a "very, very good defender," Gregersen started the match in Columbus alongside Derrick Williams and played a full 90 minutes. The Norwegian could be among several new Atlanta United players to make their home debuts Saturday, so expect a loud and rowdy welcome from the 17s.
Carles Gil (New England Revolution) - The designated player from Spain gave Atlanta United issues the last time these two teams met in Atlanta. In the matchup on May 31, 2023, Gil scored a goal in the first minute of action and finished the night with a brace. Gil was named MLS Most Valuable Player in 2021 after leading the Revolution to their first Supporters’ Shield, and his influence on the club led to a contract extension announced this week. Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda and Lennon both addressed how Atlanta United plans to contain Gil in this week's media availability, which you can read more here.
