Series History and Last Meeting
Atlanta United owns the all-time MLS series with a 9-6-1 record and has won five of the six previous meetings. Last time these two teams met at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was last summer. Giorgos Giakoumakis, Andrew Gutman and Tyler Wolff all scored to solidify a home victory for the 5-Stripes. The match also marked an emotional moment for one MLS veteran as Ozzie Alonso made his first appearance since suffering an ACL injury that kept him off the pitch for 14 months.
Tools to the Match: How Atlanta United gets a victory at home against D.C. United
Recent Form
Atlanta United has endured a tough run of form, going winless in the last five MLS matches, including three at home. The team bounced back this week with a win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as goalkeeper Josh Cohen earned a clean sheet in his club debut. D.C. United is not one of the eight MLS clubs participating in this year's Open Cup tournament. The Black-and-Red most recently played Philadelphia Union to a 2-2 draw at Audi Field on May 4 in MLS play.
Players to Watch
Noah Cobb (Atlanta United) - The 18-year-old Homegrown has filled in recently at center back for Atlanta. Most recently he replaced Stian Gregersen who had to be subbed off in the 11th minute of Tuesday's Open Cup match. Cobb's minutes have been a postive sign in his development and placed him in world-class company. The defender ranks in the top 15 in the world in minutes played among center backs under 19 years of age and joins a list containing some pretty big up-and-coming names in the world of soccer.
Christian Benteke (D.C. United) - The backline for Atlanta United will need to keep an eye on Christian Benteke, the 6-foot-3 forward for D.C. United. Benteke started the season off with a bang, scoring three goals to lift D.C. United to a 3-1 win opening weekend, a hat trick that awarded him the first MLS Player of the Matchday of the 2024 campaign. Since then, he's gone on to score five more goals in MLS play, bringing his total to eight on the season, good enough to currently rank third in the Golden Boot race.
