Series History and Last Meeting
Atlanta United owns the all-time series with a 4-1-0 record (W-L-T). The last time these two clubs met in MLS play was all the way back in 2019. A slight tactical switch from Atlanta United led to a 3-0 shutout at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The two sides have an interesting, somewhat intertwined, history -- they're the 22nd (Atlanta) and 23rd (Minnesota) expansion clubs in the league, both started MLS play in 2017 and both clubs are named 'United.' Most notably, these clubs have met in significant moments. In the home debut for Minnesota, Atlanta United won 6-1 at TCF Bank Stadium in the infamous "snow game." The teams also faced off in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup final. Atlanta won 2-1 to lift the trophy.
Recent Form
Atlanta United had a good start to the season, but fell flat in the month of April, going winless in four matches. The 5-Stripes did secure two points on the road with draws in New York and Chicago, played tough Eastern Conference side Philadelphia Union to a draw, and racked up its third clean sheet of the season last weekend. Meanwhile, the Loons have earned five wins plus some strong results so far in 2024, including a 2-0 victory over last year's Western Conference champion LAFC and a 1-1 draw to defending MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew. Minnesota United enters the matchup coming off two straight wins, including a 3-0 shutout at Charlotte FC.
Players to Watch
Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United) - The Homegrown fullback scored the Goal of the Month in April, a rocket from long-distance in the 2-2 draw with Philadelphia, which also landed him on MLS Team of the Matchday. With a center back pairing that has rotated a lot this season, Wiley, along with his counterpart on the right Brooks Lennon, has been a steady presence on the backline, starting eight matches this season. The 19-year-old is a local favorite and good play from him, on either end of the pitch, is sure to get Mercedes-Benz Stadium rocking Saturday night.
Tani Oluwaseyi (Minnesota United) - Minnesota's 2022 MLS SuperDraft selection out of St. John's University is off to a good start to the season. Oluwaseyi, a Nigerian-born Canadian, leads the Loons in scoring with four goals. The 6-foot-2 forward is a threat on aerial duels, but he can also slip in behind the backline and finish like he showed with his most recent goal in Minnesota's 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.
