Series History and Last Meeting
Because St. Louis CITY SC was founded in 2019 and joined MLS in 2023, this will be the first time these two teams play each other. CITY SC played their first MLS match against Austin FC, besting the Texas club 3-2. In September of 2023, they broke the record for most wins by an MLS expansion club with 17 wins. They also won the Western Conference in their first year as a franchise. CITY's primary colors are CITY Red, navy, and yellow accents as an homage to the City of St. Louis flag.
Recent Form
After a rough patch of play, and a coaching change, it looks like Atlanta United could be rending in the right direction. They are now 1-0-1 under interim head coach Rob Valentino. A spectacular goal from Thiago Almada lifted Atlanta United over D.C. United on Wednesday. With the win over D.C., they are now sitting in ninth in MLS Eastern Conference with a record of 5-8-5. St. Louis has experienced struggles of their own this season. The 3-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday saw St. Louis’s record drop to 3-9-6 in MLS Western Conference table.
Players to Watch
Daniel Rios (Atlanta United) – With Almada out for the match, and the recent transfer of Giorgos Giakoumakis to Cruz Azul, Atlanta United will need goals from somewhere. Daniel Rios was acquired on loan from Liga MX side CD Guadalajara in March. Since then, he has scored in three games for the 5-Stipes, two in MLS play and one for the Open Cup. His most recent goal came at home against Houston Dynamo FC.
João Klauss (St. Louis CITY SC) – The Brazilian striker leads the team with five goals. St. Louis enters Saturday’s contest in a bit of a drought and has been shutout in their previous three MLS matches. The last time St. Louis scored was June 1 in the 3-3 draw with Inter Miami CF. Klauss contributed an assist in that match, his second of the season, and will surely be in the hunt to break his team’s scoreless streak Saturday.
