Match recap: Atlanta United can't break through in draw with D.C. United

3.21vsDCMatch-Recap-16x9

Atlanta United played the protagonist role as head coach Tata Martino has preached, but the 5-Stripes couldn't see their possession into production. Saturday night's match against D.C. United ended 0-0, as the home side had over 64% possession but only registered 2 shots on goal for the match. Atlanta United's defense was thorough and allowed very little for their opposition in a match that lacked the creativity needed for goalscoring.

What happened: The 5-Stripes took the protagonist role early on in the match, pushing into D.C.'s half. When the ball recycled back to the keeper, though, the visitors were eager pressers, leaving little room for error when Atlanta passed around the back.

Still, the home side controlled the ball. In the first five minutes of the match, the 5-Stripes completed a club record 65 passes for that time period.

Cooper Sanchez had the first shot on target, as the 17-year-old showed zero fear letting a volley from outside the box rip. In the end, it was a simple save for Sean Johnson in net.

The problem for Atlanta throughout the first 45 minutes was evident. D.C. United was willing to drop deep into a low block, and the 5-Stripes couldn't break it down. They maintained steady possession, just over 60% by the end of the first half, but they didn't have enough substantial chances to show for it.

The second half began with Atlanta United once again jumping into the driver's seat. They stayed patient on the ball, waiting and recycling until channels opened up. But D.C. United were disciplined in defense, careful not to move their line up too high and give up counterattacks.

Tata Martino went to Steven Alzate and Saba Lobjanidze off the bench as the 5-Stripes chased three points. But it was D.C. United who nearly stole them with a couple of great chances late.

In the 82nd minute with a long shot that went off the post and hit Lucas Hoyos' head, nearly deflecting back into the net but instead going wide. Then, in the 87th, Brandon Servania let a long shot go from the right side and hit the crossbar.

The match winded down to it's conclusion from there, as neither teams showed enough creativity to find a break through.

Standouts:

  • Stian Gregersen, in his second consecutive start, was commanding on the backline. The 5-Stripes earned a clean sheet for the first time in the 2026 season, thanks in large part to his ability to win aerial duels and stop D.C. United attacks before they developed.

Milestones:

  • Alexey Miranchuk and Stian Gregersen made their 50th starts for Atlanta United in all competitions.
  • Atlanta United allowed just 0.16 expected goals, which ties the second lowest the club has allowed in a regular season match in its history.

Up next: Atlanta United won't play next Saturday as instead Mercedes-Benz Stadium will see a weekend of international competition. The United States Men's National team will host two friendlies against Belgium Saturday, March 28 and Portugal Tuesday, March 31. The 5-Stripes return to MBS for 404 Day, when they'll take on Columbus Crew.
