Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almirón was voted the MLS Player of the Month presented by EA Sports by members of the media for the month of April.
The 24-year-old Paraguayan scored a league-leading five goals and added two assists in April to lead Atlanta to an unbeaten 3-0-1 record. Amlirón is tied for the league lead in goals with teammate Josef Martinez (six), tied for fourth in MLS in assists (four) and leads MLS in shots (47) through eight games. He is one of only two players in MLS with at least five goals and four assists along with New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips. Atlanta is riding a season-long seven-game unbeaten streak and sits in second place in the Eastern Conference standings with 19 points (6-1-1 record) and a game in hand on New York City FC.
Almirón began the month with an assist (Watch Assist) and a pair of penalty kick goals (Watch First Goal) in Atlanta’s 5-0 victory over Los Angeles Football Club on April 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Watch Second Goal). The Paraguay National Team midfielder followed that performance with an assist on Chris McCann’s goal in a 2-2 draw with New York City FC on April 15 (Watch Assist).
The 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year continued a strong run of play with a penalty kick goal in Atlanta’s 2-0 victory over the LA Galaxy at StubHub Center on April 21 (Watch Goal). A penalty kick goal in the 70th minute equalized the match (Watch Goal), while Almirón’s 83rd minute finish extended Atlanta’s lead to 3-1 (Watch Goal).
Almirón put in three straight MLS Team of the Week performances in April and was named MLS Payer of the Week for Week 9. This is the first time he has been named MLS Player of the Month.
