From Washington D.C. to Greece, from Montreal to France, the 5-Stripes were worldwide this past month. Let’s look back at some of July’s best moments from on and off the pitch.

Bienvenue, Tristan

Entering as Atlanta’s first signing of the summer transfer window, midfielder Tristan Muyumba joined the 5-Stripes from French Ligue 2 side EA Guingamp. Muyumba made his first appearance and start in Atlanta’s Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul, where he maintained an 87.3% passing percentage and converted his penalty kick in the shootout.

All-Star Appearances

Giorgos Giakoumakis and Thiago Almada both made their All-Star debuts last month in Washington D.C. for the 2023 MLS All-Star Game against Arsenal FC. Almada also appeared in the MLS All-Star Skills Challenge, where he broke the record in the Passing Challenge. Atlanta United was also featured in the MLS NEXT and Unified All-Star matches.

Free Kick Magician

Thiago Almada did it again. July’s Goal of the Month comes from the Argentine midfielder’s stellar rebound in the 2-0 win against Philadelphia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The goal was Almada’s eighth of the season and sixth outside of the box, the most in MLS this season.

Shutouts on Shutouts

Following the win over Philly, the 5-Stripes continued their winning streak when they crossed the border and defeated CF Montréal 1-0. It was the first time this season the team posted two consecutive shutouts and the first consecutive wins since March. Both Philadelphia and Montréal were held to only one shot on target.

An Emotional Reunion

It’s been a long five months for Giakoumakis since he moved from Greece, which made it even more heartwarming when his childhood best friends surprise visited him in Atlanta after the match against Orlando City SC. Giakoumakis said it was a “great push” he needed to stay strong until he can return home after the season.
