Atlanta United U-19 defender Nigel Prince has been named the Academy Player of the Month for August.
Last season, Nigel anchored the backline for the U-17s, helping the team to a 9-3-1 record, five clean sheets and a third-place finish in the MLS NEXT Southeast Division. The 17-year-old, Atlanta-native finished the 2020/21 campaign with five goals, including a hat-trick against Inter Miami’s U-17 on March 6th.
He has picked up where he left off this season, helping the U-19s to a 2-0-1 start in the United Premier Soccer League.
“Nigel has been a standout player in the Academy since joining us in 2017,” U-19 Head Coach Steve Covino said.
Nigel was a member of Atlanta United’s inaugural U-12 team and has risen through the ranks of the Academy, impressing coaches and teammates at each level, and even earning the chance to train and compete with Atlanta United 2.
“He is a leader on and off the pitch,” Covino said. “And he’s more than deserving of Academy Player of the Month honors.”
Nigel and the U-19s are set to take on Georgia Storm FC on Saturday, September 18 at Alexander High School in Douglasville, Georgia at 6:00 p.m. ET.
The team currently sits third in the Southeast Conference standings, but looks to climb up the table with a win this weekend.
