Midfielder Santiago Sosa recorded his first career MLS goal for Atlanta United in the opening score against Columbus Crew on August 21. He calmly collected a rebound on a Brooks Lennon cross, that was additionally headed by Caleb Wiley, and delivered a world-class strike that froze the goalkeeper at his spot.
Sosa joined Atlanta United in 2021 from Club Atlético River Plate, a club in his home country of Argentina. He was unavailable earlier in the season as he recovered from sports hernia surgery he had at the end of 2021, but has seen more consistent time since his return to the starting lineup on July 30 against Chicago Fire. The midfielder has made four straight starts for head coach Gonzalo Pineda.
Although it was his first MLS goal, it wasn't Sosa's first goal for Atlanta United in all competitions. The midfielder scored in the Concacaf Champions League competition against Philadelphia Union on May 4, 2021. That match resulted in a 1-1 draw.
