Atlanta United scored two goals in the win over Philadelphia Union, and on Monday both scorers were named to the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi.
Thiago Almada and Brooks Lennon were honored on the league's weekly list for Matchday 22, capping off what was a strong performance for Atlanta United. The team shutout defending Eastern Conference champions Philadelphia Union on Sunday with a 2-0 win in front of a lively crowd of 43,527 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Almada and Lennon were the two goal scorers for Atlanta.
It was a memorable night for Lennon, the 25-year-old from Paradise Valley, Ariz. The fullback made his 100th appearance for the club in a regular season match, becoming just one of five players in Atlanta United history.
His goal was the second of the match for Atlanta United and arrived in the 79th minute.
"I was really impressed with everybody's performance tonight," Lennon said. "And you saw we kept a clean sheet, which is the most important part for a defender. I was really happy with how we played."
Lennon's goal was assisted by Almada, which added to the midfielder's contributions on Sunday. Almada scored the opening goal of the night in the seventh minute. The World Cup winner gathered his own rebound after his direct free kick was blocked and launched a rocket that put Atlanta United ahead early.
The goal was the eighth for Almada on the season. Six of those goals, including the opener against the Union, were scored from outside the box, which makes him the league leader.
Almada's assist to Lennon's goal was his 10th assist of the season, which leads MLS and Atlanta United.
"I think today in MLS, any team can beat any team on a given day, but we're strong," Almada said. "We responded in that way today, and I think this is the path we have to stay on."
Almada has now been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday three times this season. It's Lennon's second time on the list.
