Atlanta United returns to MLS action this weekend when it travels north to take on CF Montréal at Stade Saputo. After picking up a much-needed confidence boost in the final Leagues Cup 2025 game, the 5-Stripes hope to carry over that momentum against a side that is in a similar position to Atlanta in the table. Atlanta defeated Atlas 4-1 on Wednesday night with four different players finding the scoresheet. Montréal meanwhile was only able to earn two points in Leagues Cup courtesy of a shootout victory. Both teams need three points to climb up the table. Let’s take a look at the Tools to the Match presented by Home Depot against CF Montréal.
Continue current attacking form
Atlanta’s attack has been finding its groove over the last several matches across all competitions. The 5-Stripes have scored two or more goals in five of their last six matches played. On Wednesday night, Alexey Miranchuk found the back of the net for the third time in his last four matches across all competitions. Saba Lobjanidze curled in a beautiful free kick to open his goal scoring campaign. The Georgian winger also leads the team with seven assists. Atlanta’s attack needs to continue to produce at a high level in order to give the team the best chance to secure three valuable road points on Saturday night.
All eyes on the Prince
It’s been a difficult season for CF Montréal as the Canadian side has earned 18 points from 25 league matches this season. One of the bright lights on the year has been striker Prince Owusu. The former Toronto FC striker has found his stride in Montréal, leading the team with 11 goals and two assists in 2025. His 11.1 xG number for the season indicates that he has been pretty efficient with the scoring chances he’s been given. He scored twice in Montréal’s Leagues Cup 2025 campaign as well. Atlanta’s defense, which has been undergoing some changes this transfer window, have to be aware of Owuso’s positioning and movements in and around the box at all times. A quiet game from Owuso could be a great sign for Atlanta’s chances at a road victory.
Set Pieces could be key on both sides
On paper, Atlanta and Montréal look fairly evenly matched based on their 2025 seasons so far. Oftentimes, set pieces can be the deciding factor in these types of matchups. Atlanta’s defense continues to work on set piece defending in nearly every training session. Atlanta currently has a –7 goal differential on set piece goals during the 2025 MLS Regular Season (6 goals for, 13 goals against on set pieces). If Atlanta can reverse that trend on Saturday, it will be in a position to bring home three points from north of the border.
