Atlanta United 2 signed American goalkeeper John Berner as a free agent on Dec. 21, 2023. Berner was selected by the Colorado Rapids as the No. 35 overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft out of SIU-Edwardsville.
Berner made his MLS debut on March 15, 2014, at New York Red Bulls and played the following season with Charlotte Independence in the USL Championship, starting 17 matches. During the 2016 season, he recorded a career-high seven clean sheets in 20 appearances for Independence. After stops in Phoenix, St. Louis and Memphis, Berner signed with Huntsville City FC in 2023 where he acted as a player and coach during the team’s inaugural season in MLS NEXT Pro. He finished the season with eight starts and 28 total saves.
Prior to Colorado, the St. Louis, Missouri native played on the collegiate level at SIU-Edwardsville where he garnered Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2012 and 2013, as well as First Team All-MVC honors in 2012.
2023 (Huntsville City FC): Made eight starts over 13 appearances, making 28 total saves.
2016 (Colorado Rapids / Charlotte Independence): Sent on season-long to Colorado Rapids affiliate Charlotte Independence.
2015 (Colorado Rapids / Charlotte Independence): Sent on season-long to Colorado Rapids affiliate Charlotte Independence.
2014 (Colorado Rapids): Appeared in six matches, including five starts, and kept clean sheets against the Portland Timbers and Chicago Fire FC.
