Carmona was a regular in midfield for Tata Martino’s side in his first season in MLS, as he made 30 league starts and chipped in two goals and two assists.
Carmona joined Atlanta United as a free transfer and spent the previous eight seasons in Italy with Atalanta B.C and Reggina. He made more than 150 appearances in the top-flight of Italian football, majority of which came with Atalanta where he played since 2010. He helped the Nerazzurri earn promotion to Serie A for the 2011-12 season after they finished first in the league. Atalanta have remained in Italy’s top-division since. Over seven seasons with Atalanta, Carmona made 161 combined appearances and scored five goals with three assists. Carmona has also represented the Chilean National team with 47 caps, appearing in each of the last two FIFA World Cups.
2017 (Atlanta United): Carmona made 31 appearances and 30 starts, recording two goals and two assists in his debut MLS season. He scored at New York City FC on May 7 and at home against San Jose on July 4. His passing accuracy of 89.24% led Atlanta and ranked seventh-highest in MLS (min. 999 passes). MLS Cup Playoffs: Played all 120 minutes against Columbus on Oct. 26. US Open Cup: Played 90 minutes against Miami FC on June 28.
2016/2017 (Atalanta): Started two games before joining Atlanta in early February.
2015/2016 (Atalanta): Carmona made eight appearances while dealing with an injury.
2014/2015 (Atalanta): Carmona made 33 appearances with 32 starts, while helping Atalanta stay out of the relegation zone throughout the entire season.
2013/2014 (Atalanta): Carmona started 30 of the 32 matches he appeared in. He scored two goals, including the game-winner against Sampdoria (Match 16), while helping lead Atlanta to an 11th place finish in Serie A.
2012/2013 (Atalanta): In 20 league matches Carmona made 20 appearances, 19 starts, and scored two goals with two assists. He scored the game-winner against Napoli (Oct. 31).
2011/2012 (Atalanta): Carmona helped Atalanta return to Serie A where he made 28 appearances. He scored his first Serie A goal against Napoli on April 11 in a 3-1 win.
2010/2011 (Atalanta): Carmona moved to fellow Serie B club Atalanta and started 30 of his 32 matches while recording a career-high three assists. Two of his assists set up the game-winning goal in each match against Pescara (Sept. 11 and Feb. 5).
2009/2010 (Reggina): Following Reggina’s relegation, Carmona appeared in 35 matches in Serie B.
2008/2009 (Reggina): After transferring to Italian club Reggina, Carmona made 32 starts in Serie A. He recorded one assist against Lecce (Oct. 26).
2008 (O’Higgins): Carmona transferred to O’Higgins and played 17 matches and scored three goals. He scored his first goal for O’Higgins against Melipilla on March 8 in a 1-1 draw.
2007 (Coquimbo): Carmona made 15 appearances and netted a career-high four goals. He netted the game-winner against Puerto Montt (Sept. 25) and a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over Concepcion (Nov. 10).
2006 (Coquimbo): Carmona made 20 appearances.
2005 (Coquimbo): Carmona made 27 appearances and scored two goals.
2004 (Coquimbo): In his first professional season as a 16-year-old, Carmona made 30 appearances and scored one goal. His first professional goal came against rivals Deportes La Serena on July 9.
INTERNATIONAL: Carmona was part of the Chilean National Team for each of the last two World Cups. In 2010, he started three matches, including a pair of 1-0 wins in group play, and a knockout match against Brazil. He played a key role in each tournament’s qualification, starting a combined 14 matches. He also appeared in all four matches for Chile during the 2011 Copa America, where he made two starts. A natural defensive midfielder, Carmona has scored one goal with La Roja, coming as the game-winner in an international friendly against Egypt on Feb. 6, 2013.
