In 2016, the Atlanta United Community Fund opened the mini-pitch at MARTA’s Five Points station, introducing Station Soccer –Five Points as well as the world’s first soccer pitch inside of a mass transit station. AUF continues to look to transform an unused or underused space, about the size of a tennis court or larger, into a unique asset that serves neighborhood youth and becomes a regional attraction, creating a distinctive play space that showcases the possibility to play soccer anywhere, anytime. These spaces will allocate time for free play for local youth as well as commit time to league play in ways that generate revenue to support the ongoing operations and maintenance of the pitch.
In August 2018, the Atlanta United Community Fund and the City of Atlanta, through its Department of Planning and Design, announced an official, multi-year collaboration with Soccer in the Streets and MARTA to expand Station Soccer, starting with Station Soccer –West End,the second location of this innovative project -marked by the unveiling of two new community pitches at MARTA’s West End station on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018.
